San Ramón Waterfall, cascading down 64 meters (210 feet) on the southern slopes of Maderas Volcano, is one of Ometepe Island’s most serene and picturesque natural attractions. Surrounded by lush vegetation and teeming with wildlife, this destination offers a moderately challenging yet rewarding hike. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or a chance to explore Ometepe’s natural beauty, the San Ramon Waterfall promises an unforgettable experience.

Main Information on San Ramon Waterfall

Time

  • From Parking Lot (Midpoint): 1-1.5 hours up and 40 minutes down.

  • From Base Level: 2-2.5 hours up and 1.5 hours down.

Important Info on Transportation

You can reach the parking lot at the midpoint by car or ATV, but using a scooter is strongly discouraged unless you have experience navigating rocky, uphill, and downhill terrain. Every day, several visitors fall while attempting to navigate this challenging path on scooters, often resulting in scratches, bruises, or minor injuries.

Difficulty Level

Moderate: The hike involves some steep sections and rocky paths but is accessible for most hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.

Best Season to Visit

The best time to visit San Ramón Waterfall depends on your preferences. During the rainy season (May to October), the waterfall is at its most powerful and awe-inspiring, thanks to abundant rainfall. However, this comes with the challenge of slippery trails and the likelihood of hiking in the rain.

From November to February, the dry season offers milder weather and a much higher chance of clear skies. While the waterfall may not be as strong during this time (but still fascinating!), the pleasant hiking conditions make this the most recommended season.

Between March and May, during the late dry season, the waterfall’s flow can diminish significantly, potentially leaving it underwhelming. However, the hike itself, with its beautiful trails and wildlife encounters, can still be a rewarding experience.

What to Expect

Lush green trail with an opportunity to spot monkeys and butterflies, a more challenging, steep, rocky hike in the end and rewarding refreshing waterfall on top.

Best Start Time

8-9am: Mornings offer cooler temperatures and a better chance to spot wildlife along the way.

Guide/No Guide

A guide is not required, as the trail is well-marked and easy to follow. However, hiring a guide can enhance the experience by providing insights into the flora and fauna.

Price

  • Entrance Fee: 150 cordobas ($5)

  • Car Fee: 100-150 cordobas (depends on a day)
